Job Description
· Determine specifications and identify requirements by reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and sketches.
· Use measuring equipment to make layouts that comply to building codes.
· Cut and assemble wood to make wooden articles with precision using measuring tapes and tools
· Install, trim and fix wooden articles like doors or windows and other hardware
· Add fittings and fixtures including door handles, hinges, locks, and closures
· Build and repair wooden articles in various settings like houses, offices, restaurants, factories, warehouses, etc.
· Liaise with clients to discuss project details and timelines
· Guide trainees and other wood workers
· Estimate costs for each project when assigned
· Contact suppliers to obtain necessary material on time

Responsibilities
Tasks
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements
- Prepare layouts in conformance to building codes, using measuring tools
- Measure, cut, shape, assemble and join materials made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel and other materials
- Build foundations, install floor beams, lay subflooring and erect walls and roof systems
- Fit and install windows, doors, stairs, mouldings and hardware
- Schedule and co-ordinate work on sites
- Survey building locations and levels
- Instruct apprentices
- Supervise other workers
- Estimate costs and materials
- Maintain, repair and renovate residences and wooden structures in mills, mines, hospitals, industrial plants and other establishments
