Job Duties:
Curriculum, materials, and school performance
Direct classroom activities in accordance with A.M.I. Montessori training and learning philosophies as well as curricular and environmental standards established by the Discover Montessori Society’s administration and Board.
Ensure that children arrive each day to a clean, well prepared Montessori learning environment. This may take up to one hour daily to prepare the classroom for the following day. Contribute to classroom and facility clean-up as requested by administration.
Plan, prepare, and maintain all classroom areas and activities – including obtaining and returning children’s library books. Regularly review student progress, teaching priorities, and classroom concerns with Academic Head. If applicable, provide supervision to assistant, including guidance, development and evaluation with help from the Principal or Executive Director.
Complete individual (per student) Montessori records including Conference forms for all students, to be placed in their permanent files.
To be conversant with the Ministry of Education’s IRP’s for Master and Elementary aged children.
Complete Permanent Record Cards for all students who fall under the Ministry of Education (Master Year and Elementary children).
Carefully observe and keep daily records on each student’s individual progression through the classroom using the recording system established by administration.
Seek and participate in yearly professional development activities.
Material making.
Prepare an inventory of your classroom furniture and materials at the end of each school year.
Facility operations
Perform teaching duties under the direction of the Principal and Executive Director, subject to the overall supervision of the Board of Directors.
Maintain excellent regular communication with the Principal or Executive Director. Attend monthly staff meetings. If requested, provide monthly written updates to the Principal.
Develop a working knowledge of the Vancouver Island Health Authority’s policies pertaining to working and operating a childcare facility (Primary and After School Care teachers only).
Read and be familiar with the Parents Handbook, Staff Handbook, and any other relevant faculty policy.
At all times be prepared to have observers in the classroom and to conduct orientation meetings with prospective parents.
Maintain daily, accurate attendance records & ensure completion for May 15 and June 30.
Be accountable for all classroom related petty cash receipts. These are to be compiled, labelled and handed in every month.
Using petty cash, purchase any small items required for activities and day to day running of the classroom (i.e. Q-tips, polish, bars of soap, cloths, small pitchers and dishes, glue, paint, etc.)
Execute 7 monthly fire drills, 3 earthquake drills and 2 lockdown drills.
Child, parent, and community relationships
Promote the mission of Discover Montessori Society in daily interactions with school families and the community at large.
Maintain appropriate, professional relationships with families, staff and volunteers.
At all times, on and off duty, behave in a manner appropriate for a Montessori educator.
Participate in facility events including occasional socials, two yearly staff parties, and bi-monthly Parent Education Evenings.
If requested, give presentations on Montessori topics at Parent Education Evenings.
Maintain regular communication with parents through twice-a-year conferences and monthly newsletters. Lead teachers are expected to provide monthly newsletter submissions. Make additional time available to parents via email, phone, or conference as needed for legitimate concerns with support from the Principal.
CC the Principal on all correspondence having to do with the school, students and classrooms.
Call to the attention of the Principal, any student with special difficulties or needs and be prepared to discuss with parents.

Job Requirements:
At least 3 years of experience as a teacher in the Montessori system at the elementary school level, including experience working in the outdoors/nature.
BC Independent Teaching certificate (or ability to meet requirements prior to starting employment).
AMI elementary certification.
Bachelor’s Degree.
First aid certification required.
